Michael Pollan

Best-selling author and sustainable food advocate

Over the past 20 years, Michael Pollan has written books and articles about the places where the human and natural worlds intersect: food, agriculture, gardens, drugs, and architecture. He is the author of several best-sellers, including In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto and The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals. The latter was named one of the 10 best books of 2006 by the New York Times and the Washington Post.

A contributing writer to New York Times Magazine since 1987, Pollan has received numerous awards, including a James Beard Award, the John Burroughs Medal, the QPB New Vision Award, and the Humane Society’s Geneses Award. His essays have appeared in many publications and anthologies, including Best American Essays, Best American Science Writing, and the Norton Book of Nature Writing.

Pollan is the John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and the director of the Knight Program in Science and Environmental Journalism. His most recent book, Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation, was published in 2013. A four-hour Netflix miniseries based on Cooked premiered in February 2016.
