The native New Yorker started out singing the old-fashioned way - as a choir member of his church. His older brother led the way and secured a recording contact with his Gospel group, Take 6, in the late '80s. McKnight followed suit and secured his own deal with Mercury Records at only nineteen years old. He released his self-titled debut album in 1992 and had immediate success. His duet with Vanessa Williams, "Love Is", became a #3 hit and the album was certified Platinum. McKnight became an R&B mainstay over the years, but he emerged on the pop charts with his third album, Anytime. The disc was released in 1997 and became a double-Platinum success earning McKnight two Grammy nominations in 1999. McKnight toured nationally to promote the disc while working on his biggest commercial and critical success of his career.

McKnight released Back to One in 1999 and became a Pop-Adult Contemporary crossover sensation. The album featured his biggest single to-date, "Back to One", and was certified triple-Platinum, becoming his highest selling album to-date. McKnight embarked on the sell-out Back to One national tour which featured Eric Benet as the opening act. Since the release of Back to One, McKnight released five more albums, all of of which have charted in the top five of the Billboard R&B albums chart. His album sales stand at over twenty million worldwide and he holds the record for the most Grammy nominations without a win at 16.

In addition to his recording duties, McKnight made his Broadway debut appearing in the lead role on the Broadway revival of Chicago in 2007. He hosted his own morning radio show on the Jazz-infused LA station the Wave entitled The Brian McKnight Morning Show from 2006 until 2010. McKnight even hosted his own late late night talk show from 2009 until 2010. The singer is currently in the studio putting the final touches on his tenth studio album, Just Me, and will embark on the Just Me Tour, this 2011. McKnight's lengthy and diverse career is storied and acclaimed. He was able to evolve with the ever-changing nature of R&B and managed to find success within several genres and through several platforms. He is a survivor and a music industry veteran who is looking to attain that ever elusive Grammy with his latest album.
